What to Wear to a Wedding: The Do’s and Don’ts
Over the weekend Joey and I went to my dear friend and one of my blogging bestie’s wedding! It was honestly one of the best weddings I’ve ever been to. From the decor to the ambience, it couldn’t have been a more perfect day. The wedding, family, and love between Brianne and Eric was so obviously present and it was so heartwarming to be a part of it.
Brianne is quite the fashionista, owning No. 14 Boutique and blogging at Just a Girl Boss, so it occured to me…What to wear to a wedding?? I feel like the attire for guests at a wedding has evolved quite a bit so I decided to take what I observed to answer this question for you!
What to Wear to a Wedding?
1. DO Determine the Wedding Style:
Is this a dressy occassion or is it casual? In the past the time of day used to determine how dressy you needed to be at a wedding, however, this really isn’t the case anymore. Some things to take into consideration would be the location, the type of venue, and knowing the bride and groom’s style.
2. DON’T Show up in All White:
Honestly, this may be an old school rule, but I’m sticking with this one. Don’t wear white. The Bride should be the only one in white (should she choose to be). It never fails, though, there is always one person who does show up in all white. Aside from the bride wearing this color, nobody else is wearing all white either so it really makes you stand out. Let’s just be honest… the day isn’t about you. It’s about the bride and groom! There are a million other colors you can wear that day, save the all white dresses for another occation.
3. DO Take Comfort Into Consideration: Weddings can be a long day, so definitely pack an extra pair of shoes! I usually will grab a nice pair of flats because I know I cannot survive a full day/evening in high heels. When I’m picking out a dress, first I keep fashion and trends in mind, but secondly I like to take comfort into consideration. I dont’ want to be fidgeting all day with pulling my skirt down or my top up.
4. DO Take the Perfect Clutch: I can’t go to a wedding without a small little bag or clutch. I pack all of the essentials in it including my touch up make up, lipstick, gum, id, cash, and maybe a little advil for later.
If you are still having trouble deciding what to wear to a wedding, when in doubt choose a look that is in between dressy and casual. A nice floral maxi dress or a below the knee lace dress are really good options. If you aren’t sure on a color, black dresses are always a good idea. It’s a classic and timeless color that will always work.

I ended up choosing this Alexis dress because the color was stunning and the detail of the dress was so unique. I love the material because it has a nice stretch to it and the higher neckline makes this dress such a classic and timeless dress.

I love that dress! So beautiful! And I’m with you on all of the wedding tips. I actually went to a wedding this past weekend and was proud to see that NO one was wearing white. 🙂 What do you think about red, though? I’ve worn red to a wedding once, and was told afterwards that maybe that wasn’t a great idea because it’s “too much”. I’d never heard that rule before, but it definitely made me choose a different dress to wear to this wedding which sucks, because I love red!

First…your dress- STUNNING! You looked beautiful! Second, I loved following your snaps. I was at No. 14 for the first time on the one year anniversary because I happened to be in town visiting one of my girlfriends and I love Brittany Fuson so I had to take the chance to meet her…and was at the cash register when he proposed to Brianne. It was one of the sweetest things I’ve ever seen! I had never seen a proposal and it was so cute…following along her wedding planning on Instagram I couldn’t wait to see her chic wedding…and WOW! Anyways, after my long winded story…I love your tips, and they’re all so true!
